Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and many shooting for the low hand.
