Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players shooting for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
