Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/low provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand.
