• Omaha Hi Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, along with many battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
