• Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting range of wagering possibilities and because you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with several battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
