Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting assortment of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
