• Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Outline

    [ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi/low begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as several shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
