Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand.
