Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of betting options and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
