Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand.
