Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low.
