Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of betting choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low.
