All About Omaha
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem difficult initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high, and many battling for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
